Supplies:

*       Cardstock – 4 12 x 12 sheets of Bazzill for the eight pocket project described. You will need to have extra cardstock to fill your pockets when you are finished.

*       Paper Trimmer

*       Two Eyelet Brads

*       Two Large Eyelets

*       Adhesive of your choice

*       Crop a Dial or Hole punch

*       Embellishments of your choice

Before libraries went to computers, all books had the classic library book card holder glued in the back of the book.  Used in a mini album format, these pockets can be filled with recipe cards, personal journaling, photographs – anything your heart desires. My album demonstrates the things that I love most.

There are many ways to play with this these albums once you have the basic construction principles. Using the following template from Mirkwood Designs, the basic construction f the book can be altered using a larger template or buying store bought library card holders.

1.  Using the Design provided, make 8 library card holders. Once put together, I inked all edges in black as this is what suited my paper. Choose whatever ink suits your paper, but you can choose not to ink at all.

2.  Cut two pieces of cardstock into strips measuring 7 ½ x 3 ¼ .

3.  Glue the back of one library card envelope to the edge of one cardstock strip as shown. Turning the cardstock over, glue a second library card envelope to the backside of the cardstock, lining it up with the first library card envelope. Repeat on the other end of the rectangle, so that you end up with two library card envelopes glued back to back on each end of the cardstock.

4.  Now fold this cardstock strip in half, so that there is now a crease in the center of the cardstock strip in between the two sets of library card envelopes.  Now repeat this process with the other four library pocket envelopes so that you have two sets of glued pockets as shown.

5.  On each folded strip, measure and mark two spots near the center fold, each about ¼ inches from the crease and ½ inch in from the end. Using a hole punch place holes at each of these spots.

6.  Now set your strips aside. Measure a new cardstock strip, 11 ¾ inches long and 3 ½ inches wide. Starting at one end, put creases at these marks: ¾ inch, 1 ½ inch, 2 inches, 6 7/8 inches, and 7 1/8 inches. Your strip will look something like this after you add the holes.

7.  Now you have 2 ceases near the center that are about ¼ inch apart. This ¼ inch strip is you book spine and you will need to place holes on either side of this strip. Take one of your folded strips that already have holes in it and place it where it will go in your book and now mark with a pencil. Then punch the holes out accordingly on each side of your spine. Now take both your folded strips and place inside the spine and line up all the holes. Place your two large eyelets on the outside of the spine. This may be a little difficult as your album is thick at this point, but it will work.

 8.  Fold the last crease over and glue in place as this creates your closure for the album. Fold at the next crease to see what your closed album will look like.

9.  Now using whatever closure you would like (I have used an eyelet brad to place a ribbon through) adhere to your album.

10. Now you get to embellish your album with whatever you like. I have placed ribbons through the eyelets on my spine. With each of my envelopes I have placed my “loves” on the outside of each envelope and a picture of the “love” on the inside of the envelope.

All About Them Mini Book
By Judy Beeksma

This online class is inspired by Challenge #8 in The Go Scrapping Amazing Race!! I thought how could I use some of my scraps and this is what I came up with. It is a wonderful little family album that I can carry with me.  Your friends at work or new people you meet would sometimes love to see pictures of your family; this is a terrific album for just that purpose.

First, I started with all the pieces of cardstock (chipboard) that your local scrapbooking store places in your bag each time you purchase paper. I had so much of it; I thought for sure it would make a nice book of some sort.  I then went through my stash of patterned paper and found a set that I had not used much of.  I found these great patterns from American Crafts.  I usually buy each sheet in the matching pattern and because I usually only do one page layouts; I had plenty left over!!  You could also just find matching papers among your stash…they don’t have to be from the same line of paper. I also looked through my ribbons and embellishments to find what pieces of ribbon I had very little of and used the leftovers to finish off the album.

So then I just started cutting. Each piece of cardstock is as follows:

Cover               -           4 x 3 ½
Second Page    -           6 x 3 ½
Third Page        -           8 x 3 ½
Fourth Page      -           10 x 3 ½

Once these were cut I cut my patterned paper to match; keeping in mind I only had some half sheets of PP and needed to cut according to what paper I had. You just have to be creative.  I did not even upload my pictures to my local photo studio; I just printed them myself in wallet size and converted them all to Black and White to make the album more cohesive with a flow.

The ribbons and embellishments are whatever suits your paper.

Enjoy and have fun!!!!!

Sketches....
By Lori Mancini

As scrapbookers we all have times when our inspiration or ideas have run out or have left us temporarily.  Do all of your layouts look the same and you need to shake it up a bit?

Sometimes all it takes is a view of a new layout, or fondling some new patterned paper and inspiration will strike – but for those times when you are just blank here is a sketch that I hope will inspire you.

I used to have a hard time with sketches trying to follow it to the letter but once you realize that it is just a starting point you can really use it to help your creativity.  Turn the sketch on its side – or just take an element of it.  Use the colouring as a basis for your layout or switch out the arrow with flowers or a bracket to suit your own style. The possibilities are endless and it is just a guide for your own layout.

Here is a quick sketch to inspire you all and a layout based on the sketch.

Happy Scrapping everyone!

Fold Your Own Mini Album
By Nancy Davies

First cut the cardstock that will be your background into three 4" x 12 " strips.
Cut the first strip to 10 3/4" long.
Mark and fold the first strip at 2" (away from you), 2 1/8" (away), 6 1/8" (away), 6 1/4" (away), 10 1/4" (away).
Mark and fold the second strip at 4" (toward you) and 8"(away from you).
Mark and fold the second strip at 4" (toward you) and 8"(away from you).

Attach strip A to strip B using the 1/2" wide tab left on the end of strip A. (It should glue to the back of the beginning of strip B)

Fold up your album in a fan shape from right (full 4"x4" square) to left (small flap). Folds should go: 1. away, 2, forward, 3away, 4 away (wraps around behind album), 5away (flap folds around album). The two sets of score lines 1/4" apart give you room to put pics and embellies inside and still fold it shut)

. The square that is now partly covered by the flap is your "cover" square. Unfold album and punch a hole (according to eyelet size) in the center of each of the 1/4" folds on either side of the cover and set eyelets in holes.

Cut a contrasting square 3 3/4" x 3 3/4" and centre on cover.

Cut a floral image from your papers, or use a large silk flower, and centre on your cover. Embellish with a large button. Round corners of flap.

Cut a strip of contrasting cardstock 2 1/4" x 4", and trim the left long edge with scalloped scissors. Adhere under flap. Embellish bottom right of flap with monogram sticker.

Cut matts from various co-ordinating papers at 3 3/4" square, and adhere as desired. Cut a few 3 1/2" squares and use as double matts on some pages.

Thread ribbon through album and fold up, tying ribbon at front.

Sanding:
I took a small but rough emery board and gently rounded the edges of my paper and wooden door hanger.

Distressing: In my project this meant sanding lightly first and then running my Tim Holtz Old Paper Distressing Ink over the face of the item I am distressing, then dabbing it very lightly with my Versa Magic Dew Drop Jumbo Java ink pad.

Inking: Take your ink pad and dab the edges of the item you are inking, this will ink not only the edges but a small part of the face of the item.  This gives depth and definition.

Start with a wooden door hanger.  They are available in most dollar stores.

Cover the door hanger is Midnight Rouge by Cherry Arte.

Cut around the door hanger and cut out the hole.

Sand edges with an emery board.  Ink and distress the edges.

Cut a 5.5 by 2.4 inch piece of pink cardstock.  Round the corners and ink the edges.  Glue it down.

Add a collection of different trims around the center of the door hanger.

Add a piece of darker pink cardstock 2.5 by 2 inches, inked on the edges, along the bottom of the lighter pink cardstock.

Add a Teresa Collins (Junkitz) Newspaper Flower with the button removed.

Add a Prima Big Blossom.  I stapled mine to make it smaller.

Add a funky button with a KI Memories Tattoo heart rub on in the center.

Add two pieces of rik rak under the flower.

Add several lengths of ribbon to the handle.  Trimming at an angel.

Add the word IN in American Craft Thickers.  Add a KI Memories Tattoo rub on heart to the dot on the I.

Cut a piece of cardstock 2.25 by .75 inches long in light grey cardstock.  Ink the edges.  Using American Crafts Alpha pals add the word PROGRESS.

Add a KI Memories Tattoo rose to the top left corner, a small black rose by the word IN and 3 small multicolor heart rub ons by the flower.

Spell out ART on a small white acrylic tag with rub ons.  Attach it to your handle by the other ribbons with another length of ribbon.

Now your all done..Simply hang on scraproom door!!!

Curves and Circles
By Judy Beeksma

Any layout that uses curves, circles or rounded corners immediately takes on a softer “feel”.  They are also so versatile. You can use them on the entire layout or just part of a layout. They offer an opportunity to add much dimension to a page and the ability to add many patterned papers as I have done on my class this week.

Once the curve or circle has been cut, it gives you a great opening to add any type of embellishment. In my class this week you will find that I have added small eyelets and some great ribbon.

1.     Take PP #1 and draw a circularly edge and cut this out. Then cut it 5 ½ inches in width.

2.     Now take PP #2 and cut a piece 3 inches by 12 inches.

3.     Now take PP #3 and cut a piece 1 ½ inches by 12 inches.

4.     Now take PP #4 and cut a circle 6 inches in diameter.

5.     Mat you photo in white C/S.

6.     Ink all edges with black ink (or whatever ink would suit your picture).

7.     On large circle using a hole puncher, cut out 14 holes approximately 1 inch apart. Cut 14 pieces of ribbon; 3 inches in length. Place each length through each hole and staple at edge of hole.

8.     Place second circle a mere 1/8 inch from lower left side of layout and glue down. Now punch 8 holes approximately ¾ inch apart and place your 8 eyelets.

9.     Now glue all other pieces as seen in picture.

10. Embellish with words and quotes as you wish!!

Sweet Love Layout
By Nancy Davies

Supplies: Cardstock, 3 co-ordinating papers, 1 tag or scrap of paper for journaling, 1 big flower (with a button or other embellishment for the centre), other embellishments of your choice. (I used rub-ons from My Mind's Eye and chipboard hearts.)

Instrucions:

*Cut a strip of patterned paper (a floral or your largest print) 6"
wide
and adhere to cardstock about 1"from left edge.
*Cut a strip of patterned paper (I used a stripe) 3" wide and adhere
horizontally, crossing over the first piece.
*Cut two strips of patterned paper about 1/2" wide (I used a dark
brown)
and adhere just above and below the horizontal strip.  (I cut these
from
a wide striped paper, just cutting out sections that went well with my
chosen papers). (see image 1)

*Cut a wider strip, about 1 1/2", that highlights an interesting pattern
in the paper, or alternately use a strip of wide ribbon, and adhere it
vertically 1/2" from the left edge of the floral or large print paper.
*Cut Mats for your photos.  I cut 1 at 4"x6", and 3 at 3"x4".  Attach
to layout. (see image 2)

* Adhere Photos to layout.
*Embellish with a journaled tag, a large flower at the top left corner of the large photo, and a title across the top right corner. (see image 3)

This layout can easily be extended into a 2 page layout if you have
lots
of photos.  Just extend the horizontal stripes across a second piece of
cardstock and cut several more photo mats at 3"x4", staggering them
across the second page above and below the horizontal stripe.  Add a
larger journaling block to the top right side of your second page, and
extend your embellishment (I used a rub-on image) onto the second
page. (see sketch)

Any Occasion Flower Ribbon Card
By Lori Mancini

Here is a fast and easy card that can be made in less than 10 minutes.  The possibilities are endless with colour combinations and you can change this up for use with any occasion.  Think pastels for Easter – or bright yellow and orange for a summer theme.  I once used beautiful white lace against a black background (with Rhinestones for the centre) and it was a stunning wedding card.

MATERIALS
Ribbon (various colours)
Cardstock for Card
Patterned Paper
Felt Tip Pen
Circle die cuts or circle punch
Glue Dots

To start cut cardstock to desired size for card or use a pre made blank card as I did above.
I find premaking blank cards (or purchasing them) really saves time when you just want to make a fast card.

Find a die cut sticker for the centre of your flower (or make your own using a circle punch)

Now with your ribbon tie little bows in  about 1” lengths.  A trick here is tying the bow from the end of a long ribbon and then cut it off.  It is much easier to tie this way.  I used 3 or 4 lengths of each colour.

Now using your glue dots adhere ribbon by the knot around the outer edge of circle.

Once all adhered – you may need to place various glue dots around some pieces to have them sit down properly.

Using coordinating patterned paper cut a strip and place at bottom of card.

Adhere long strip of ribbon in centre of patterned paper and tie another ribbon into a bow on this to add some visual interest.

Add another die cut on top of ribbon bow to finish off card.

Using fine tip felt tip marker outline edges going back and forth 3 – 4 times to give it a sewn look and to add some finishing touches to the card.

You could use any word or sentiment and change it up for birthdays, anniversaries, get well card or just thinking of you cards.  Have fun with this by alternating ribbon colours and type. A child’s card could be made using rik rak – or think about beautiful lace or sheer ribbon in blue or pink for a baby card.  Be creative with this and make some fun and funky flowers to add dimension to any project.

Can’t wait to see what you come up with!

Heart Chipboard Mini Album
by Erica Hildebrand

Supply List
8 LARGE Maya Road Fresh Chipboard Hearts
- or Equivalent
7 sheets of the Basic Grey Blush Paper
1 sheet of Brown Bazzill
1 length of Teal Ribbon 18 inches
1 length of Red Ribbon 10 inches
Versa Magic Dew Drop in Jumbo Java
Emery Board
One Heart One Mind Alphabet Rubons
Dollarama Small dot letter Rubons
Basic Grey Wholly Cow Rubons
Sakura Gelly Roll Gold Pen
6 pictures

Exacto Knife
Adhesive

Techniques Used:

Sanding:  I took a small but rough emery board and gently rounded the edges of my chipboard this way, and then ran it over the face of the chipboard lightly.
Inking
: Take your ink pad and dab the edges of the item you are inking, this will ink not only the edges but a small part of the face of the item.  This gives depth and definition.

Instructions:

You start with 6 of the outside circles of Maya Road Fresh Heart chipboard pieces (or other Circular Chipboard Pieces -- You can make your own by Cutting Out Heart Centres from Circular Pieces of Chipboard or heavy cardstock).  Remove the centers. You will not need these ones.

Cover each of the six in different papers.  I used Basic Grey Blush.
Ink, and sand the edges.

Find yourself 6 pictures that will fit within the empty heart.  Trace the chipboard circle onto the picture lightly after centering it within the heart.  Cut out those circles.

Glue the pictures down.

Take one of your Chipboard Heart Shapes and remove the center two hearts.  You need the outside and the center, the middle heart you will not use.

Cover the outer circle with Bazzill and the small inner heart with Basic Grey Blush.  Sand and ink the edges.

Trace two circles the same size as the outer chipboard shape, one in Bazzil, one in the Blush Paper.

Glue the Blush circle one down peeking through the front of the heart and place the smaller heart on the front centered within the recess.  Set the Bazzill circle aside, you will need it later. This will become the front of the album.

Repeat this same process with a different whole chipboard heart. This will be the back of your album.

Take the front of your album once more and add your rub on words.  I added the One Heart One Mind Rubons onto the heart, and the Dollarama Dot Alphabet Rubons to the Bazzill. My title reads: With All My Heart.

Place this finished piece onto the left side of your 18-inch ribbon, leaving a 1-inch overlap at the end.   Adhere the ribbon, making sure it is centered. Flip it over and place your adhesive all over the back of the chipboard and only the ribbon you just adhered. Fold your 1-inch overlap in half and make sure it is stuck well.  Place your Bazzil circle that you set aside on top of this adhesive to stick your cover to the ribbon.

While that dries. Take each of your picture pages and outline the heart with a Sakura Gelly Roll Gold Pen, and add a One Heart One Mind Rub On with that person’s first initial and a Basic Grey Wholly Cow Rub On to add some interest.

Place three of your pages centered under the ribbon with a one gap between the pages. Adhere the ribbon.  Carefully add adhesive to each of these pages and the ribbon adhered to it.

Place your other 3 pages on top of those pages, making sure they are even.  Press each one down; making sure it is adhered well.

Take the other Bazzill circle you had set aside and leaving a 1-inch gap between it and the third page, center and adhere it to the ribbon.

Fold the final 1-inch overlap over and adhere down. Add adhesive to the Bazzil circle and the ribbon on the back of the circle. Add your back page pressing tightly to make sure it is also well adhered.

Fold this album up accordion style.

Place the length of red ribbon around the center of the chipboard album and tie allowing just enough room to slip on and off.

There!  Your album is now done!

Explosion Box
by Lori Mancini

This fun little box is a great evening project and is so flexible that you could make one for almost any occasion.  By changing the paper and the photos – you can capture many memories or surprise someone with an “explosion” of photos once opened.  Have fun with this one and be creative...although it looks like a lot of work the base of this project (the box and lid) shouldn’t take you any more than 30 minutes.

MATERIALS
3 Sheets of Cardstock
(12 x 12) – to be used for box.  I used 2 of one colour and one complimentary.  They can all be the same colour, all different shades or three completely different colours – the choice is yours.
Patterned Paper
– Once my box was made I used patterned paper to decorate my pages.  For an even faster way to create your pages you can try double sided Patterned Paper (preferably in Cardstock weight as well), and this will eliminate the step of decorating each page with patterned paper.  One thing I want to mention though is my pages are much sturdier and more substantial since I used CS and layered the patterned paper on them.  I am happier with the overall weight of each page since I tend to use very heavy embellishments and they are still “exploding” even with all of my embellishments on them.
1 sheet of Cardstock for Lid
Ruler
Paper Scorer or Bone Folder
Adhesive
(Glue, Double Sided Tape, and preferably a strong bond adhesive like Glossy Accents)
20 – 21 Small Photos
Embellishments.

DIRECTIONS

  1. Using your 3 sheets of cardstock cut them to the following sizes:  (See Fig 1)

Base:                9” x 9”
Midddle:           8 5/8” x 8 5/8”
Top:                 8 ¼” x 8 ¼”

2.   Now score your paper on all four sides at the following measurements (See Fig 2)

Base:                3” in from each end
Middle:             2 7/8” in from each end
Top:                 2 ¾” in from each end

3.   Now cut off the corners from each sheet - you will end up with a cross (Fig 3)

  1. layers should be equal and each sheet slightly smaller than the one below it.  Using the inside square only – adhere the layers together.  (Please remember not to put adhesive on the bottom of the base sheet as this is the bottom of your box). You can use double sided glue or a strong adhesive here but you will need a good solid adhesion right to the edges for your box to really spring properly. Once glued in place let dry and move on to creating the lid for your box.  After pages have dried fold up all 4 sides into the centre of the box. (See Fig 4)

  1. LID:  Cut and score the lid as follows: (Fig 5)

Size:                 6 ¼” x 6 ¼ “
Score:              1 ½” from the side

6.   Now instead of cutting off the corners – turn over the lid and score the corners diagonally.  Score your pieceof paper from the corner up to the intersecting point where your two previous scores meet. (See fig 6)

7.   Folding the lid is tricky.  Try to think about how clothing boxes are folded in the corners and this is very similar.  Fold the sides down and pinch the corners inside together.  You will need a very strong adhesive for this.  2 way tape or a tape runner will not hold this in place so use something that you are sure will withstand the pressure of holding the sides together.  Hold the adhesive in place and glue down all 4 corners (if you want to be certain use paper clips to hold together until dry or little butterfly clips).  Again I used Ranger Glossy Accents and with holding it for a few seconds on each corner did the trick.
(Fig 7 & 8)

  1. You can now decorate your lid to suit your theme and title it. (Fig 9) and place all of the folded pages up into it to create a box. (Fig 10)

  1. You are now ready to decorate your pages and get creative. (Fig 11)  Before you decorate you may want to use a corner rounder (as I have) or if you want to ink the edges, now would be a perfect time.  For the photos I used only 20 since I left the middle spot empty on my project.  I printed out my photos using a contact sheet and printed all 20 of them on an 8 ½” x 11” sheet of paper and they were the perfect size to allow for embellishments as well.  If you are using patterned paper to decorate your cardstock you will need 8 squares of each of the following size.

Base:  2 7/8: squares
      Middle: 2 5/8” squares
      Top: 2 3/8” squares

Once you are finished decorating your pages fold them up and place lid on top.  You are now ready to show off your creation and “explode” some memories into someone’s life.

Have Fun and Enjoy!

Altered Spice Rack
by Share Smith-Baxter

Project Instructions:

There are not a whole lot of instructions as each persons spice rack
will be different but it gives you a good idea how you can turn a small
$1 item into a stylish scrapbook storage for brads, beads, eyelets,
ribbon charms, etc...!

Found my spice rack for $1. Traced bottom to make template for top and
bottom. Because my spice rack didn't come apart, I cut the circle in
half and then placed each half around the base. Added in flowers, ribbon
and boshers for embellishment.

Fill jars with embellishments for easy in sight access!!

Funky Gift/Jewelry Box
by Nancy Davies

This funky gift box/jewelry box is created from a round wood box
available at Michael’s and some dollar stores (Dollarama).

Instructions:
*First paint the inside of your box and lid to match the papers you
have chosen. I used a rich jewel toned sparkle paint, since this gift box is meant to double as a jewelry box.
*Trace a circle to fit the top of the lid on solid cardstock or
paper.  (I used Bazzill's new sparkly cardstock, very girly)
*Cut coordinating strips of paper for the side of the lid and the side
of the box. You may have to use two strips to go all the way around
depending on the size of your box.
*Adhere papers to box, putting the glue on the box instead of the paper to prevent rippling.
*Cut closely around a larger element from your coordinating paper (I used a flower) and adhere to box.
*Paint a chipboard monogram and embellish with rhinestones, and attach to top.
*Trim the top edge with decorative trim and finish off with a bow.

Pyramid Christmas Ornament
by Erica Hildebrand

Instructions:

Cut out the template below on cardstock.

Score all of the lines, only scoring so the ornament will fold up.

Cut out four triangles 1 cm smaller then each of the sides, ink and adhere. to the center of each of the triangles.

Punch four holes at the top of each of the triangles for the ribbon.

Fold together only gluing the side flap to create the pyramid, leave the bottom open.

Cut a star out of chipboard, cover with matching paper. Ink and sand the edges. Find the front and paste it down on the bottom right side.

Print out your holiday greeting on white cardstock and mat on a complimentary cardstock.

Glue the greeting across the bottom, slightly over the star.

Tie ribbon through two of the four holes.. whichever you prefer.

Cut out a circle of chipboard, cover it with paper, sand, ink and punch a small hole in the top for ribbon. Write on it To: and From:. This is the gift tag. Put ribbon through it and attach it to the ribbon on the top of the pyramid.

Punch two holes in the bottom flap. One on each end. Fold it up and mark where you need the two other holes for the brads on the back of the pyramid, then punch them.

Place the brad on the inside of the flap and fold up, pushing the BACK of the brad out the back of the pyramid using your fingers carefully. Fold the brad ends down OUTSIDE and this way you can open it whenever you like.

You can glue it down once you have your gift inside if you do not wish to reuse them Smile

Altered Planner

Altered Day Planner

With the holidays soon here and a new year fast approaching why not get organized in 2007 and carry around your very own altered Day Planner.  This project is a sure way to brighten up your work load and to personalize it to any style or mood you would like.

Materials needed:

  • Day Planner – Coil Bound. Available at any business supply store.  My size is 3 ½” x 6”- but you could purchase a larger or smaller one to suit your needs.

  • Pick a sheet of your favourite paper. This will be used for the outside covers. Although not necessary a heavier cardstock is best for this project as it will have more durability and hold up longer.

  • Ribbon

  • Misc. rub-ons, stickers and letters.

  • Metal embellishment for weight on age divider.

  • Glossy Accents or similar product.

Open up you day planner and align the edge of the cover (coil edge) to the edge of your patterned paper.  Then trace your cover size (including rounded corners) onto the patterned paper and cut to size.

Repeat for Back cover.

Now you could cut ¼ to ½ of an inch off of the inside edge and miss the coils or you can have a more custom look by doing the following.

Align your paper up to the coil and gently mark with pencil the center of every coil (or hole).  This mark will be where you punch holes into your paper and should align with the holes that are already in the day planner cover.

Now using a hole punch, a crop-a-dile, or your Making Memories tool set - punch out holes to line up with cover using the guide you just marked out.  Be careful here to make sure you are back the same depth on the paper as the Day  Planner .  Once all of the holes are punched go back and carefully cut slits in the paper from the edge of the paper to the center of every hole.

Repeat this process for the back cover.

Now you are ready to adhere your paper to the cover.  This step although seems simple is very important.  Make sure you are using a very good adhesive that is going to adhere the paper to the cover.  Most day Planners have a plastic or a coated cover so a regular glue stick or adhesive will not hold up.  I recommend a product  like Rangers Glossy Accents or KI Gloo.  Be sure to cover the entire paper paying close attention to the coil area and edges.  You can use a small object to firmly place paper under the coils and to make sure all of your paper is secured onto the cover.

Once your front and back cover are down it is now time to decorate.  Choose one of your favourite sayings or quotes that will inspire you and adhere to cover.  On mine I used a rub on (My life) from a baby quote sheet and a sticker which gives me inspiration – “Nothing is worth more than this day”

For your title you can use rub-ons, stickers, or any variety of letters that you love.  I used my quickutz font and used the word “DATES” on the front of my planner.  You could use the year instead (2007) or even perhaps your name.

One additional step you can take to protect any of your stickers, letters or rub-ons from wear and tear is to give them a coat of Glossy Accents.  Especially the rub-ons.  I went over the rub-on (My Life) and my “DATE” title and went a little outside the lines (larger than the image) which served a double purpose of protecting it from becoming scratched and also to give it better adhesion to the paper.  You may want to do this step at the very end after you have completed your planner - as a good coat of Gloo or Glossy Accents will take a few hours to dry.

Cut out 2 – 3” inch pieces of ribbon – enough to cover the coils. I tied one piece to every coil. This look is personal.  Some like to have it completely full while others like just a little colour.  While using a coordinating ribbon cut one piece that is the same length as your book height.  Find an embellishment and tie it to the one end of the ribbon to use as a weight and tie the other end to the top coil.  This now can be used for a book mark that will give you quick and easy access to the proper date in your planner.  My embellishment is a K & Co watch piece from that attached with a little safety pin.

I’ve only been using this planner for a few weeks now but it makes me smile when I take it out of my purse.  It is bright and cheery and the ribbon book mark helps me find the page I’m looking for quick and easily.  What a better way to put a little of “YOU” into all of you chores, appointments and to do list than by making your altered day planner.  With Christmas approaching fast, this could make a great stocking stuffer for that hard to buy for person.

Thanks for letting me share.

Altered Nightlight
by Erica Hildebrand

I bought a night light with an ugly yellow cover on it from the dollar store.  I ripped the material and the ribbing off and found that underneath was a plastic cover, perfect for altering!

I took the nightlight cover off the nightlight so I could work better with it.

I laid the nightlight on a piece of Basic Grey Lily Kate PP and rolled it from side to side to make sure the paper was glued down well.

I then took an exacto knife and trimmed around the nightlight, removing the excess paper.  I filed the edges with a nail file to smooth out any raged edges.

I traced a large flower in black pen and then while it was wet dropped some white embossing powder on it and blew over it with my hair dryer.

I cut a thin strip of the pink Lily Kate paper and place it about 1.5 cm from the top.  Above this strip I placed a bunch of rhinestones.

Along the bottom I glues down some fringe I found in Michaels with little pearls on it.  Perfect for a baby room.

Then I used my old CM swurvy ruler and cut a thin strip of the pink paper to place above the fringe ribbon.

I placed a prima flower over the large pink flower on the paper.  I attached it with a Memory in the Making Brad.

I added some white rubons on the side without the flower, they are not really visible in the light but they look cute in the dark .

Smile - Single Page Layout
by Judy Beeksma

Supplies Needed:

1 sheet 12 x 12 Blue Bazzill C/S
1 sheet Basic Grey LilyKate Queen Anne
1 sheet Basic Grey LilyKate Pansy
1 sheet Basic Grey LilyKate Twinkle
Basic Grey Fancy Alphabet White Rub-ons
Technique Tuesday Square Tiles (or any heavy duty chipboard)
13” green ribbon
3 green buttons
3 white square brads
Uniball Signo White Ink Pen (or any white ink pen)
Any green ink
Liquid glue
Sanding block or sanding paper

Instructions:

1. Using LilyKate Celery, cut 3 squares measuring 1 ¾” x 1 ¾”. Using liquid glue, adhere these squares to your Technique Tuesday square tiles. Let these rest so that the glue may dry and set.
2. Using LilyKate Pansy, cut one piece measuring 9 ½” x 6”. Ink all edges with green ink. Secure this piece to the blue Bazzill cardstock ¾” from bottom and 3/16” from right side of your cardstock.
3. Using LilyKate Celery, cut one piece measuring 4 x 10 ½”. Ink all edges with green ink. Adhere to page ½” from top of page and 1 ¼” from right side of page.
4. Using LilyKate Twinkle, cut one piece 9 x 9”. Ink all edges with green ink. Adhere to paper 1 ¼” from bottom and 2 ¼” from right side of page.
5. Using your 13” piece of green ribbon, adhere to page 2” from the bottom of page, thereby overlapping your pattern paper.
6. Using your Basic Grey Fancy Alphabet White Rub-ons, cut out the letter S, M, I, L, and E. Remembering to keep the backing on your letter until ready to rubdown. Place these letters just under the twinkle pattern paper as shown in the example.
7. Place 3 white square brads in top left corner of your page. Place them ½” above the Twinkle paper and 1” apart.
8. Mat your 5” x 7” picture in white cardstock preferably and ink all edges. Adhere to layout ½” from top and ½” from right side of Twinkle paper.
9. Now you return to your 3 squares and sand all the edges so that you have a negative effect and see the white of the edges. Take 3 green buttons and glue to center of each square as shown in the example. Using a white ink pen, doodle on the edges of the squares for added dimension. Then glue these squares on their side, as in the layout shown, so as to look like diamond shapes.
10. Journaling can then be done atop the Twinkle pattern paper, but actually writing on the Celery pattern paper.
